1973 |
United States NASA researchers discovered the therapeutic properties of the NZ Green Lipped Mussel (Perna canaliculus), while searching for anti-cancer agents naturally present in marine species. The green lipped mussel was one of the marine molluscs they studied, and they noted that it had some very impressive anti-inflammatory properties.
McFarlane Laboratories NZ Ltd followed up on this first research, and developed a process for processing and preserving the therapeutic properties into a freeze-dried powder format. This was the beginning of Biolane®.

1974 |
First commercial Biolane® Extract produced and sold in New Zealand under retail brand Seatone®. By mid 1980s, Biolane® was selling in more than 25 countries, under a range of third party customer brand names.
Biolane® initially spread largely through word of mouth, particularly through immigrants in New Zealand sending it to relatives overseas. These relatives then told their friends and family members about it.

1980 |
First major clinical study proving the anti-inflammatory effect of Biolane® Extract carried out in Scotland. The results, published in Practitioner in 1980, showed Biolane® was effective in treating patients with both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Since then numerous other studies have been published confirming Biolane® Extract’s effectiveness.

1999 |
Healtheries purchased the assets of McFarlane Laboratories NZ Ltd. Healtheries was already one of McFarlane Laboratories NZ’s largest clients; and formally combining resources allowed Biolane® to be more widely marketed. The unique Biolane® Extract is still manufactured in the original McFarlane location, using the proven time and temperature parameters.

2005 |
Research conducted by Australian Centre for Complementary Research and Education (ACCMER) proved that Biolane® Extract was an effective anti-arthritic agent. The research was presented at the 10th World Congress on Osteoarthritis in December 2005 and published by OARSI (Osteoarthritis Research Society International) in the journal Osteoarthritis and Cartilage 2005. Additional research by ACCMER found that Biolane® had a more comprehensive range of activities than glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate.
